5 Easy Steps to Healthy Holiday Eating

12 Nov

No one wants to deprive themselves of the delicious and comforting holiday treats we anticipate each year. How can we avoid putting on extra weight without sacrificing the enjoyment of the holiday season? Here are some tips to help you stay healthy this year:

Drink Plenty of Water – alcohol, sugar and caffeine can dehydrate your body, causing it to store more fat from the foods you eat.

Physical Activity – take nice, brisk walks with your friends and family.

Watch Your Portions – have smaller portions of everything. Period.

Don’t Skip Meals – before leaving for a party, eat a light snack like raw veggies or a piece of fruit to curb your appetite.

Practice Healthy Holiday Cooking – preparing your favorite holiday dishes using low-fat or fat-free recipes will promote healthier holiday eating. You can use some of the suggestions below:

  • Gravy — Refrigerate the gravy to harden fat. Skim the fat off.
  • Turkey – Enjoy delicious, roasted turkey breast without the skin.
  • Green Beans — Do away with the casserole – bake or steam fresh green beans on their own, season lightly and top with roasted almonds.
  • Desserts — Bake a crustless pie. Substitute two egg whites for each whole egg in baked recipes. Replace heavy cream with evaporated skim milk in cheesecakes and cream pies. Top cakes with fresh fruit or a sprinkle of powdered sugar instead of frosting.
  • Last but not least, always be realistic during the holiday seasons. Don’t try to lose weight during a time of year when temptation is EVERYWHERE; instead focus on maintaining your current weight. By following these tips, you can do just that without any struggle. Happy Holidays!
