July Essential Oil of the Month…Lemongrass!

2 Jul

Botanical Name:Cybopogon citratus

Source: grass

Enjoy July with lemongrass essential oil.  Hot summer days are ahead and the lemony, slightly sweet and earthy aroma of lemongrass can be refreshing and cooling.  The summer season is an excellent time to put this essential oil to work.  Lemongrass is in the same family of plants as citronella; therefore it is useful in keeping those pesky bugs away (attend Essential Oils for Outdoor Days workshop to learn more).  Lemongrass essential oil is useful when making your home cleaning products (you can learn about this in our Clean Your Home Naturally workshop); it has strong antimicrobial and fungicidal properties.  Additionally Lemongrass is a good choice to diffuse in the home to disinfect the air, it also helps to neutralize odors.  It’s aroma is refreshing, energizing and uplifting.  Use it in the morning for that little boost to get you started with your day.

Uses & Facts:

Outdoor Bug Away Diffuser Blend

5 drops Lemongrass

5 drops Cedarwood

2 drops Peppermint

Add these essential oils to a tea light diffuser outside.  Fill with water, light the candle and receive the benefits of natural pest control.  (Depending on the size of the area you are sitting in you may want to have a couple diffusers going with this blend).  As always, use caution with lit candles.

Tip: for an even stronger benefit, use a citronella tea lights in your outdoor diffuser!  Keep in mind that you may have to refill the blend if you are outside for extended time as essential oils are volatile and evaporate into the air.
