Aromatherapy for a Good Night’s Sleep

22 Mar

Unmade Bed

We have all been there.  Long nights  laying there with thoughts zooming around in your head, your mind won’t stop, the to-do list just keeps going and going with endless thoughts churning like an ocean during a storm.  You simply cannot sleep and time keeps ticking by leaving you awake while the world is at rest.  A sleepless night is miserable to say the least.

In order to function and perform daily tasks we need good quality sleep.  We spend an average of one-third of our lives asleep.  Sleep is necessary in order to recharge our minds and our bodies.  According to Harvard Medical School the average American adult gets 6.9 hours of sleep on a weeknight and 7.5 hours of sleep on  weekends and about 70 million of us sleep poorly and for more than half of Americans poor sleep is a long-term problem.  Sleep helps with memory function, attention and awareness to our surroundings, reduces stress, makes us less prone to accidents, increases  our creativity and more.  If you are not getting adequate sleep or if you want to enhance your sleep, the use of essential oils can truly help.

How Aromatherapy Can Help

Diffusing certain essential oils in your bedroom can help you get the restful sleep you need.  Essential oils will not cure insomnia or the cause of it however, using essential oils with therapeutic properties for calming the nervous system can help to promote a good night nights sleep.  Many of us are familiar with tea light diffusers however nebulizers (electronic diffusers) are perfect to use while you sleep; there is no candle and they turn off automatically.  You can fall into a slumber and not worry about a thing!

Here’s a list of essential oils to use for a restful nights sleep:

Chamomile, Roman– Helps to promote calm and restful sleep.

Clary Sage– Balancing to the mind, calming.

Frankincense– Helps to reduce anxiety and stress.  Also

helps with the respiratory system.

Lavender– Calming.  Helps to reduce mental stress and anxiety.  Very helpful for insomnia.

Neroli– Has sedative properties, soothing.  Useful in times of insomnia.

Orange–  Calms the nervous system.

Rose– A sedative for the nerves.  Helps to alleviate irritability and insomnia.

Sandalwood– Helps to relax the nervous system.  Useful for insomnia.

Aroma Blends for a Good Nights Sleep

Here’s a few sleep inducing blends to get you started.  These blends are based on using a nebulizer– in each case add distilled water to your nebulizer along with the essential oils.

Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep

  • Place an aromatic blend in your nebulizer about 15-20 minutes before turning in; the aroma will fill your room before you get there making it a sanctuary for sleep.
  • Take an aromatic bath using essential oils listed above.  Use no more than 6-10 drops total in your bath.
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages after noon.
  • Avoid rigorous exercise at least 3 hours before bedtime.
  • Avoid falling asleep with the television on, better yet, remove the television from your bedroom completely.
  • A few minutes of meditation can help and gentle yoga stretches can also help you relax after a busy day.

Take time to wind down before bed so your body has time to switch gears from the activity of the day.  Perhaps spend some time reading or writing out your to-do list for tomorrow.  Find a routine that works for you.  You may find that you look forward to bedtime with the use of a nebulizer and essential oils and wonder how you lived without it!  Combining the use of aromatherapy with an evening routine to wind down is a healthy habit in which you will be rewarded with shut-eye, a well rested body and mind to take on the day!  Good night and sleep well everyone!

Baby it’s Cold Outside- Winter Skin CareTips

21 Jan

Your skin, the largest organ of your body, protects you, absorbs nutrients, provides insulation and so much more.  With exposure to drier air and colder temperatures skin loses oil and water it needs to stay healthy and supple and becomes dry, irritated, cracked or itchy.  Here are some tips to help your skin as the journey through winter continues.

In the Bath:

  • Avoid long hot showers.  As tempting as it may be to take a hot shower or bath to warm up, use lukewarm water only.  Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils.  The hotter the water and the longer the shower the more oil your skin loses.
  • Dry skin brushing.  Do this once a week to help stimulate your skin’s natural oils.  Use small swift circular motions towards the heart.  Dry brush skin right before your shower or bath.
  • Use natural soaps that are gentle to your skin such as Your Body Needs… Goats Milk Soap, Lavender Soap and Peppermint Eucalyptus Soap.  Avoid commercial soaps, these tend to be drying to the skin, and are loaded with synthetic fillers and fragrances.  You can even make your own body washes using unscented castile soap, essential oils and sweet almond oil!
  • Exfoliate in the shower once a week.  Create your own sea salt and sugar scrubs using sweet almond oil and essential oils.  These scrubs rid the skin of dead cells and add lipids back into the epidermis.
  • Always, always, always apply body oil after a shower or bath.  You can create your own blends, or if that is a daunting task, use Your Body NeedsClassic Blend Body Oil.  Apply body oil when skin is still slightly damp, this way your skin will be both hydrated and moisturized.

Give Your Hands a Hand:

Our hands are exposed to everything!  Give them the extra care they need.

  • Hand washing and detergents are drying to your skin.  This doesn’t mean you have to stop washing your hands!  Remember to apply moisturizer to them frequently such as Your Body Needs Hydrating Hand and Foot Cream.  This cream is truly a winter- time staple!  Never leave home without it!
  • Keep your hands protected from the elements by wearing gloves or mittens.
  •  Avoid hand sanitizing products that contain alcohol.  Alcohol is extremely drying to the skin.  Can’t live without your hand sanitizer?  Make your own using essential oils such as Tea Tree, Thyme and Lavender mixed with distilled water and aloe vera gel.  Place ingredients in a 2 ounce spritzer bottle and take it with you!
  • Wear gloves when washing dishes.  This will protect your hands from being over-exposed to hot water and detergents.

In the Laundry:

  • Check your detergent.  Do not use anything that contains synthetic fragrances.  Instead, use varieties that are free of perfumes and dyes.
  • Avoid scented dryer sheets. If you do use dryer sheets, again, make sure they are free from fragrances.
  • If you miss that fresh laundry scent add a damp cloth with a few drops of Tea Tree or Lavender essential oil and pop it in the dryer along with your clothes!

Other Ways to Help Your Skin:

  • Don’t forget your feet; they get dry too!  Be sure to use a pumice stone on callused areas and apply Hydrating Hand and Foot Cream to them before going to bed.  You will have smooth feet in the morning!
  • Using heat in the home is unavoidable however that adds to the drying of your skin.  Use a humidifier to replace lost moisture in the air.  Not only will your skin benefit, your sinuses will too!
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.  Water helps all systems of your body, skin included!

Protect and take care of your skin.  Nourish it by using natural products; your skin absorbs everything you put on it into your body.  Your skin is the only organ of the body that is directly exposed to it all! Nourish it, protect it and it will protect you!  Stay warm and mosturized everyone!

Want to learn more about taking care of your skin?  Attend our workshop, “Love the Skin You’re In” on Tuesday February 19th at 6:30 PM. You will learn how to use essential oils in skin care and create a body oil and an exfoliating salt scrub.  Call the office or stop by the studio to register.

December Essential Oil of the Month…Juniper Berry!

Juniper berry essential oil has a fresh, woodsy and cleansing aroma.  It is an energizing essential oil which makes it a good choice to use this time of year as the days get shorter.  Diffuse juniper berry essential oil in your home for an energizing and outdoorsy feel.  Try blending with peppermint and cinnamon essential oils to create a cheerful ambiance in your home.

Juniper berry essential oil is known for its detoxifying qualities.  Because of juniper berry’s warming and circulatory benefits it helps to get the blood flowing and rid the body of wastes.  Juniper berry essential oil also helps to reduce muscle aches and pains and joint stiffness.

Try juniper berry in your massage this month with our Winter Wonderland massage blend.  This month our massage blend features juniper berry, black pepper, cedarwood and peppermint.  This blend will help to give you energy, detoxify and relieve muscle soreness.

Uses & Facts:

Detoxify Salt Scrub

November Essential Oil of the Month…Black Pepper!

2 Nov

Botanical Name: Piper nigrum

Source: dried, unripe fruit (berries)

The aroma of black pepper essential oil is warm and spicy and perhaps you could say a benefit of its aroma is it will not make you sneeze!  While black pepper essential oil is not typically popular to use in diffuser blends it can help to pack a spice “punch” when blended with other spice oils such as clove bud and cinnamon.   In addition to blending well with other spice oils black pepper essential oil blends nicely with citrus and floral essential oils.  Be sure to schedule your massage this month to experience black pepper essential oil blended with florals.  Our massage blend of the month, “Autumn Comfort” consists of black pepper, lavender, geranium and clary sage essential oils.

Therapeutically black pepper essential oil is analgesic, antiviral, stimulating and helps increase circulation.  The analgesic, warming and circulatory qualities of  black pepper essential oil make this essential oil ideal to use with massage.  Black pepper essential oil is excellent to use to reduce pain associated with sore muscles, arthritis and sciatica.  Black pepper is also beneficial to the respiratory system; you can even use it in a massage blend to rub on your chest when suffering from the common cold, flu or bronchitis.

An interesting bit of information associated with black pepper essential oil is it has been shown to be a helpful aid for those trying to quit smoking.  The aroma of black pepper essential oil has been found to reduce cigarette cravings.  Some have found it helpful to carry a bottle of black pepper essential oil with them while quitting this habit and when cravings arise, simply breathe in the aroma instead of pulling out that cigarette.

Don’t forget to book your massage this month and experience black pepper in our blend of the month,”Autumn Comfort”.  Call the office today to schedule your appointment.  443-292-4395.
